NAYPYIDAW - Irfan Shamsuddin obliterated his own national record by three metres to win the men's discus gold at the Sea Games today.
The 18-year-old bettered his old record of 49.90m set just two weeks ago in Brunei twice in the competition with his final throw a winning 53.16m.
Irfan's victory made up for the failure earlier this morning of Lo Choon Sieng to defend his 20km walk title, finishing a distant fifth in an event Malaysia had won without fail since 1993.
Arif Zulhilmi Alet and S. Kannthasan advanced to this evening's men's 400m final as did Nurul Faizah Asma Mazlan in the women's equivalent.
