3 top women's hockey teams in S'pore tourney

Fans in Singapore will be able to catch three of the world's top women's hockey teams in action from Jan 18-23 next year.

The Netherlands, world No. 1 and 2012 Olympic champions, will be slugging it out with Australia (No. 2) and Germany (No. 5) in an inaugural friendly tournament.

Called The Project Group (TPG) International Tri-Series, it will be held at the Sengkang Hockey Stadium.

The event will serve as a warm-up for the teams in their preparation for next August's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Australia will face Germany in the curtain-raiser on Jan 18, and there will be a game a day in the six-day event.

The three teams will also be conducting coaching clinics in Singapore.

Paul Lim, chief executive of TPG Singapore, said: "Singapore performed well at this year's SEA Games and we wanted to do something to continue driving interest and support for the sport."

The national women's team finished with a bronze medal at the Games, improving on their fourth placing in the 2013 edition in Myanmar.

The men's team also clinched a silver medal.

Lim, a former national hockey goalkeeper, set up the TPG Academy in December last year, and held clinics to prepare the national teams for the Games.

The national women's team will also face two of the three teams on Jan 21 and 23.

Said national player Ivy Chan, 19, a second-year Temasek Polytechnic student : "To play against players who are role models is a big deal and we are all the more motivated to strive and learn from them."
