MIRI: A five-year-old girl who was being looked after by her grandparents after her parents' divorce, has been reported to have been sexually molested by her step-grandfather.
The girl was said to have been victimised in early February.
Her 21-year-old mother found out about the little girl's ordeal only when she visited her child.
The mother lodged a police report and on Tuesday, Miri police arrested the step-grandfather who is in his 40s.
In her police report, the mother she had placed her five-year-old daughter, her only child from her first husband, under the care of her mother and her stepfather in the Pujut Corner squatter colony.
She said that in a recent visit, her daughter had complained of pain in her private parts and told her that her step-grandfather had molested her.
Miri police chief Asst Comm Khoo Leng Huat on Wednesday confirmed that the police arrested the suspect at a coffeeshop in a commercial centre near the Pujut Corner squatter colony on Tuesday night.
He said police are investigating the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outraging modesty.
