TIP: Don't worry if you see a layer of oil at the top - it's common for natural peanut butter to separate, because it doesn't contain additives and stabilisers. Just keep the jar upside down to let the oils redistribute, and give it a good stir before eating.

PIC'S REALLY GOOD CRUNCHY PEANUT BUTTER

They're not fooling around with the "Really Good" claim. We were bowled over by the chunky nutty bits, and the hint of saltiness gave it just the right umami oomph. The thick consistency made it easy to generously spread on toast. We reckon it'll be perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream too. Actually, we're happy to eat this straight from the jar, spoonful after spoonful.

ADAMS 100% NATURAL CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER

$5.75 (454g), from Fairprice

We loved the toasty fragrance and the concise ingredients list: peanuts, with less than 1 per cent of the peanut butter made up of salt. It received equal approval from all camps - it's buttery-smooth enough for those who love their peanut butter creamy, and the slightly sandy texture found favour with crunch lovers.

Verdict: 8.5

SECOND HELPINGS ORI BEENUT BUTTER ORIGINAL

$15 (180g) from Open Farm Community

Produced by local company Second Helpings, the ingredients aren't what you'd usually find in peanut butter - besides peanuts, it contains olive oil, sea salt and honey. The honey adds a surprising layer of rounded sweetness, but it's subtle and doesn't overpower the inherent nutty quality. Thanks to the olive oil, there's no need to stir the peanut butter much.

Verdict: 8

MERIDIAN ORGANIC CRUNCHY PEANUT BUTTER

From the first whiff, there's a comforting earthiness to this single-ingredient jar. It's made only with roasted organic peanuts, skin on. It has a clean, sophisticated taste, with a clearly peanutty flavour that doesn't overwhelm your taste buds.

WHOLE EARTH 100% PEANUTS CRUNCHY ORGANIC PEANUT BUTTER

Like the Meridian peanut butter, there's just one ingredient here - roasted organic peanuts - so it's as pure as it gets. The peanut skin has also been churned, giving it a powerful nutty hit that was a little too assertive for some testers. We enjoyed the crunch, but didn't enjoy having specks of peanut skin stuck in our teeth.

MOTHER EARTH LSA BLEND PEANUT BUTTER

$8.65 (380g), from Cold Storage

This one ups the ante on the health front with an LSA blend - linseed, sunflower seeds, and almonds. Linseed takes the limelight, imparting an intense, almost slightly burnt, roasted aroma to the peanut butter. That appealed to a few testers, but most found it lacked the peanut taste; we also found the different textures and flavours of the LSA blend distracting. It's the only plastic bottle in the line-up, with a flimsy lid.
