Childcare leave should be made compulsory
Fri, Sep 05, 2008
my paper

ACCORDING to the FAQ on childcare leave on the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) website, the ministry 'strongly urges all employers to implement childcare leave at their workplaces'.

This led me to wonder why childcare leave was not made compulsory.

I recently received an e-mail message at work about childcare leave.

It said that the new entitlements would be granted to staff only from next year.

Those wishing to apply for childcare leave had to attach their child's medical certificate (MC) or a letter from a childcare centre stating that their child was not well.

The FAQ on the MOM website states that no medical certificate is required.

As my parents are taking care of my child, I would not be able to produce a letter from a childcare centre.

I am very upset and angry about my company's policy, and there are no regulations stipulating that employers must implement the new parental benefits.

Would the authorities be able to do something about this?
