Forget the endless paper chasing. With even college students scrambling to find jobs, having a college degree no longer equate to success in life.
Yes, it is true that an average US worker with a four year degree earns approximately US$1 million (S$1.27 million) more during his or her career than one without.
It is also true that the average starting salary for person without a college degree is US$51,000 (S$64,000) while a job for which no degree is required starts out at about US$28,350 (S$35,000).
The top average salary for people with a college degree is US$130,600 (S$165,700), whereas those without a degree top out at US$79,150, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
However, while a college education does pay off later in life for most, it may not always make sense to chase after a educational certificates if a person is not academically inclined.
In addition, with the job market so competitive, the time spent earning a degree may be better spent entering the job market earlier.
"Even with a college degree, finding a good job in today's economy is hard and can be very time consuming. Although those with degrees often earn more money, you can still earn a very good living without one," advised Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast.com.
In fact, there are some jobs that require just a high school education, which pays heaps more than an ordinary white-collar position.
Although these jobs may require some training, they all offer a good salary, as well as income and employment growth potential.
