More open approach to management needed

I REFER to the report, "Bosses, do 'stay' interviews" (my paper, Dec 24, 2008).

It has been said that the frustrations faced by workers stem from various failures of management. One of the issues identified is poor leadership style.

Here are other issues and what bosses can do about them:

  • Employers tend to practise an authoritarian leadership style, characterised by a top-down directing of company affairs. They believe that they know what is best for everyone.
Employers should put employees first by keeping channels of communication open.
  • Workers should be given more autonomy in their jobs.
  • Maintaining work-life balance and rewarding diligent workers or high-performing individuals can be crucial measures for retaining employees and minimising turnover.
It is time bosses took a different approach in managing their human resources.
