I READ the report, "150 security jobs available at North East CDC job fair" (my paper, Feb 17), with interest.
I welcome this move by the North East Community Development Council, and hope that the other CDCs will follow suit.
The security industry has certainly changed over the years. Now, one can see more younger people working as security officers, including auxiliary police officers.
The mindset of these security officers, young and old, needs to evolve with the times when it comes to their performance, work attitude and values.
Security officers today should be conversant in English and a second language, be computer-literate, possess good customer-service skills, have the drive to go beyond the call of duty and be vigilant at all times.
Thus, I urge the authorities to improve the working conditions of security officers.
Salary, working hours, uniforms, logistical support and benefits are the main draws which would attract more younger, qualified individuals to fill these positions.
Security officers play a very important role in protecting workplaces, schools, and even homes.
Therefore, they should have the right attitude and not take their work lightly or treat it as a stop-gap measure during bad times.
