MY 55-YEAR-OLD sister, who has been looking for a job since she resigned from her last job 11/2 years ago, is a victim of age discrimination.
She left her previous company, a foreign bank, after working there for 18 years, because she was put under intense stress by her immediate superior.
She wants to take up a less stressful job, but she is considered too old to work, even by a statutory board.
She was offered a meagre salary to do a job that requires her to do administrative work, as well as serving as a 'tea lady', in charge of buying of buns and you tiao for the office.
Now that our population is ageing, the Government must take the lead in employing older workers. It should serve as an example for the private sector.
It is wrong to say that older workers are difficult to train and slow to adapt.
Many younger workers job-hop and, worse, they do not turn up for work once they discover that they are no longer interested in it.
