Pay boss pregnant workers' wages
Thu, Nov 19, 2009
my paper

IN THE letter, 'Pregnant workers as good as the rest' (my paper, Nov 17), the writer said: 'Bear in mind also that the Government is encouraging Singaporeans to have more children.'

It hit the nail right on the head and could not have come at a more opportune time, as Singapore's population is rapidly ageing.

Child bearing is not only important, but is also critical for our armed forces, as we need to have enough males to occupy the ranks.

When operationally ready national servicemen go for in-camp training, the cost of their wages is borne by the Government.

This practice could be extended to female workers on maternity leave, with the Government reimbursing employers fully for their wages.

This would be an incentive for companies to hire women.

This is the way to go as child-bearing is now akin to national service.
