Keeping your identity safe online
>Never assume that because you took that embarrassing information off your blog or MySpace account, it will disappear forever. Information posted online can remain on the Internet in various online archives or even be downloaded by others and re-posted without your consent.

As a rule of thumb, never post anything on the Internet that you would not be comfortable to share with all and sundry. Here is a list of tips to help you stay safe while you enjoy surfing and interacting with others on the web.

  • Read the user policies of networking websites carefully before signing up. Some services allow all users to view your personal profile and photo album. Make sure that the service offers security features so that only people you are comfortable sharing information with will be able to access your site.
  • Try not to post your full name on a website, especially those without privacy features.
  • Use a username that is not associated to your real name when you are signing up for a networking site or a public forum.
  • Play it safe: never post your home address, cell phone number, or any financial information online. Avoid posting sensitive information such as details about your job that people can easily use to identify you with.
