PC crashes on Windows SP2 download

Problem with Windows SP2

I have an HP Pavilion desktop which is still running on a factory-fitted Service Pack 1.

Recently, Windows Live Messenger required me to download its latest version. This task needs SP2 and above.

However, each time I try to download SP2, my PC crashes and I have to painstakingly do a full system recovery.

I have sent an e-mail to Microsoft Support Centre for help. After following their instructions, I am able to download Windows Live Messenger 2009 but I cannot sign in.

Each time I turn on my PC, this message appears: CUcc Platform: msnmsgr. exe-Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.

When I click ?OK?, the Windows Live Messenger will  open another message: We can't sign you in to Windows Live Messenger. Signing in to Windows Live messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

The Error Code to this particular problem is 8007007f.

This message is due to the fact that your Windows SP2 update was not successfully installed.

Visit the following website: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/26873 for a thorough set of instructions on how to install SP2 and verify the installation.
