Q: I was using Internet Explorer 7 on my laptop when it asked if I would like to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8. I chose not to upgrade.
The browser then indicated that it was searching for the default address and returned with an error message, "page not found, try typing correct address or click with a known correct address". I tried, but could not get connected.
I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and tried again, but the same problem occurred.
Strangely, my MSN and Google Map work but not the browsers, both IE and Firefox, when in wireless mode. When I use a wired connection, they work fine.

A: The problem you describe is curious as the difference between working and not working is only the transmission method, that is, wireless versus wired.
While using IE8, I suggest you open the Tools and Internet Options settings. Select the Connections Tab and look at the connection options.
You should not have any items listed in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Networking settings. Next, select the Local Area Network (LAN) settings button. Deselect any options that are enabled. Singapore's local broadband providers do not require any of these settings.
Try connecting using your wireless connection again. If things still do not work out, the next step is to verify your wireless connectivity. To ensure your wireless connection is set up correctly, I recommend you remove the current wireless profile and create a new one using your Wireless Connection manager.
The reason is to ensure your settings are correct.
You need to know and select the security connection type: WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol), WAP (Wi-Fi Protected Access) or WAP2. A password is also necessary to make a successful connection. Do not forget that you will also need to know the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
If you are unfamiliar with the settings, I recommend you call your network service provider or refer to the wireless router manufacturer's manual. You can also refer to www.microsoft.com/ athome/moredone/wirelesssetup.mspx.
With a wireless connection, ensure it is set to the correct access point by verifying the SSID connection. Otherwise you may be trespassing on someone else's access point. Open a Command Line to verify a connection using the following command: PING 165.21.83.88.
The response should indicate a "Reply" from the address. If you do not receive a reply, the wireless connection is not working properly. You will need to seek additional help in making that wireless connectivity work properly.
