Acer laptops hit by safety recall

By Jasmine Osada

SINGAPORE - Computer maker Acer has launched a voluntary safety recall for two of its laptops due to a potential overheating problem.

The affected Acer Aspire notebooks, under the model numbers AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG, were all manufactured before 15 September 2009, according to information on the company's website.

A microphone cable in the affected units may overheat when subjected to extreme pressure applied repeatedly to the left palm rest. As a result, the unit's case might be deformed and the system might malfunction.

Customers who suspect that they have might have an affected unit can go to a special page on the Acer website to check their unit's serial numbers against those involved in the recall.

According to a Straits Times report, affected Acer laptops have been on sale in Singapore since May last year.
