SEOUL - Samsung Electronics, the world's top maker of memory chips, said on Wednesday market speculation that it may bid for German chipmaker Infineon was untrue.

"Such talk is untrue," said Samsung spokesman James Chung.

"We have never studied the possibility."

Shares in Infineon rose on Tuesday, with traders pointing to speculation that Samsung may make a bid for the company.

Infineon declined to comment on the speculation.
