FORGET cosmetic surgery and skincare products that burn a hole in your pocket.

There's a much simpler alternative to looking and feeling younger: Running.

Kinesiologist Dr Tan Swee Kheng, 35, said that while running may not "slow down the ageing process per se, it definitely does enhance youth and health".

Said the movement expert, who has participated in several marathons, biathlons and triathlons: "There are obvious physical benefits of running, such as the strengthening of the immune system and maintaining body weight.

"But getting fitter in the long run gives a healthier glow to the face and skin, which contributes to a younger-looking appearance."

Running also makes the heart stronger, aids blood circulation and decreases the risk factor for diseases like diabetes, she added.

Those who run regularly are less likely to experience bone and muscle loss as they age, compared to those who do not run regularly or at all, according to The Runners Guide website.

A study published by the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2002 confirmed that running, and other aerobic exercises, is associated with the prolonging of a disability-free life.

Generally, more women here are picking up running as a sport, with various women-only runs being organised.

This Sunday, 8,000 women will take part in the third Shape Run, an event organised to promote running as part of a healthy active lifestyle.

About 15 per cent of participants are in their 40s.

Dr Tan feels more women should take up running as it is the easiest exercise to pick up.

"All you need is a proper pair of running shoes and you're set."
