What breast cancer patients really need

THEY come from very different backgrounds, but Raja Azizatul Akmar, Hajah Haziah, and Lang Yum Khai have two things in common: they are advanced breast cancer survivors receiving palliative care, and they are living one happy day at a time.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in year 2001, Raja Azizatul (63) had received chemotherapy and undergone an operation to remove one of her breasts. However, her cancer recurred in the year 2008.

Hajah Haziah (72), who was diagnosed in 1998 and had undergone surgery to remove one of her breasts, had been on medication to control the cancer cells in the body until 2008, when she was told by her oncologist that she had fully recovered. Nevertheless, the cancer returned September last year, this time in her lungs and bones.

Lang Yum Khai (68), however, had survived breast and lung cancer after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1992.

Having gone through cancer and its recurrence, they shared what is important to them on their journey of survival.
