Let's talk about death.
Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said by doing so, it would make the subject less of a taboo for both the dying and the living.
He said in Singapore alone, 55 per cent of people died in hospitals and only 28 per cent, at home.
Most would rather die at home, said the Minister at the official opening of the Children Hospice International 18th World Congress this morning.
Mr Khaw said the Health Ministry will look into the subject in greater detail and identify the obstacles and gaps.
Speaking to reporters later, Mr Khaw said these include costs and the reluctance of doctors to certify death at a home.
"If need be, we shall change the rules and processes that currently hinder dying at home," he said.
The three-day congress for doctors, nurses and caregivers in palliative and hospice care ends on Sunday.
