A TOP Nepalese neurosurgeon has accused Singapore doctors of failing to provide after-care treatment for former conjoined twins Ganga and Jamuna Shrestha.

Dr Basant Pant, who heads the neurosurgery departments in two private Kathmandu hospitals, told The Straits Times in an interview in the Nepalese capital on Sunday: 'Have the twins been given the best care? The answer is 'no'.'

The girls had not received the physiotherapy and occupational therapy they needed, he said.

According to a report from The Straits Times, he had also said that Singapore doctors had not fulfilled their promise of bringing the girls back to Singapore for cranioplasty, a skull-repair surgery.

He claimed that this was "absolutely promised by Singapore".

In response to his allegations, the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) told the Straits Times that the Singapore and Nepalese medical teams had a prior agreement that if follow-up treatment for the twins could be safely done in Nepal, it should be done there.

It also added that SGH would provide backup to the Nepalese team if needed.
