Companies to recall hot/cold packs

TEN hot/cold packs marketed under three brands, namely Surgipack, Soft R & R and Osim, sold here have been recalled after laboratory tests revealed that they contained a toxic anti-freeze ingredient, ethylene glycol.

The packs should contain propylene glycol, a non-toxic anti-freeze substance, but had ethylene glycol in them, Singapore's Health Sciences Authority said in a statement dated Monday.

The Singapore authority said it was looking into the circumstances leading to the recall.

According to HSA, ethylene glycol may be fatal if swallowed, and may damage the body if inhaled or absorbed through skin.
