Chance for Alvin to live a normal life

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: One-year-old Alvin Lee Jun Wen will soon be running around and getting into everything just like other mischievous toddlers.

At the end of the month, or early next month, he will receive the RM160,000 cord blood transplant he needs.

Alvin was diagnosed with congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia three months after his birth. But his parents could not afford the treatment he needs. They appealed for help through the New Straits Times, and his case was highlighted in November and January.

Recently, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong presented a cheque for RM25,500 at Balai Berita.

He said RM20,000 came from an anonymous donor, while the rest was donated by MCA members and the public.
Another cheque for RM5,000 was presented by Wong Keng Fei Fund president Marina Chong.

She said WKF was set up in 1995 to help less fortunate children, especially those who need heart surgery.

So far, it has helped 200 children.

With a RM60,000 contribution from the government, Alvin can now have his surgery.
