2 more H1N1-related deaths up fatalities to 3

FOLLOWING the first H1N1- related death last Saturday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported two more deaths yesterday.

A 13-YEAR-OLD BOY

The boy, who suffered from epilepsy, had sought medical treatment at the National University Hospital (NUH) Emergency Department on Sunday after a day of fever and coughs.

He suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest at the emergency department and was admitted to NUH's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Laboratory tests confirmed that he had Influenza A (H1N1) on Monday.

He died early yesterday morning. The cause of death was status epilepticus (prolonged seizures), with H1N1 infection as a contributing factor.

A 55-YEAR-OLD MAN

The middle-aged man, who suffered from a motor-neuron disease, was admitted to the Changi General Hospital (CGH) ICU last Saturday.

He sought medical treatment at the CGH Emergency Department after two days of fever and increasing shortness of breath. He suffered a cardiac arrest at the emergency department that day and was admitted to CGH ICU.

Laboratory tests confirmed that he was infected with H1N1.

He died yesterday afternoon. MOH said the cause of death was severe pneumonia with advanced motor-neuron disease and underlying Influenza A (H1N1).

LATEST ICU H1N1 CASE

A 42-year-old female foreigner with a history of hypertension and who is overweight sought treatment at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Emergency Department yesterday with a three-day history of shortness of breath.
She was found to have low oxygen saturation and low blood pressure.

Laboratory tests confirmed that she has H1N1.

She is currently on a ventilator and is in critical condition.

OTHER CASES

A 42-year-old woman with hypertension and thyroid disease admitted to CGH ICU last Saturday remains in critical condition.

A 46-year-old female foreigner with hypertension and kidney disease on dialysis admitted to Mount Elizabeth's ICU on Monday is now in stable condition.

A 51-year-old female with asthma admitted to TTSH ICU on Monday is also in stable condition.

Of the three patients in SGH ICU, one has been transferred from ICU to the general ward on Tuesday while the other two patients are still in SGH ICU.

They are in stable condition.
