Indonesia's two-headed baby dies

PEKANBARU (Riau) - The 5-day-old conjoined twin boys with a single body and two heads born in Indonesia have died from respiratory failure, reported an Indonesian news agency Jakarta Globe.

The boys died at 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday at Pekanburu's Arifin Ahmad Regional Hospital, within minutes of each other.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the hospital said their survival was unlikely as the condition of siamese twins' had been deteriorating since Monday.

The Indonesian source quoted hospital director Yulwirianti Moesa saying, "they had suffered from breathing difficulties and ultimately succumbed to respiratory failure."

The unnamed boys were 43 centimeters long and weighed a total 3.2 kilograms at birth. While doctors were still trying to determine if the baby had two hearts, which would have increased their chances of survival, the boys shared all other vital organs.

They had one pair of kidneys, one pair of lungs and one anus, making them medically inseparable.

Nazardi Oyong, leader of the medical team which took care of the twins said: "Under the circumstances of having two heads, the babies should have had two hearts to survive."

According to the Detik news website, the boys' parents have had been trying to have a child for nine years and the boys' mother had a premonition of the unusual birth during her pregnancy.

The father of the siamese pair reportedly revealed that his wife said she saw that the baby would have two heads in her dream.
