GEORGE TOWN: All Malaysian pilgrims have been given free immunisation against Influenza A(H1N1) at government hospitals to protect them from infection while performing the haj.

Pilgrimage Fund Board chairman Tan Sri Abi Musa Asaari Mohamed Nor said the cost of the immunisation was borne by the board.

"We have also reminded the pilgrims to observe strict hygiene while performing the haj to avoid contracting the disease," he told reporters after sending off the first batch of 355 pilgrims from the northern states at Kompleks Tabung Haji in Bayan Lepas yesterday.

He said some 2,100 pilgrims would depart from Penang, Perak, Kedah and Perlis on board six flights beginning yesterday until Nov 20.

In his speech earlier, Abi Musa advised pilgrims to uphold the good values that Malaysians were known for such as politeness and obedience while on pilgrimage.

He said they could be exposed to numerous unpleasant situations such as extreme weather conditions, congestion, cultural differences and health problems which could result in them getting impatient and angry.

"Pilgrims should practise humility and patience and not forget to mind their manners as they are there for the sole purpose of fulfilling their religious obligation," he added.

Abi Musa also reminded the pilgrims to strictly follow regulations set by the local authorities in Saudi Arabia and volunteers from the board to ensure they experienced a safe and trouble-free trip. -The Star/Asia News Network
