Ms Christina Low's business card describes her unusual vocation as 'visionary tantrist'.
Having left a decade-long career in the corporate world of marketing, the 36-year-old who is single says that her passion now is to help couples and singles use the principles of tantra yoga to reconnect both with their feelings and their sexuality.
What led you down such an unusual path?
I was always interested in massage, bodywork and healing. There is bodywork that can help release emotional blockage. I realised that sexual health is also closely related to that. I became interested in tantra yoga as it sees sexual energy as one the most creative energies that human beings possess.
What does tantra mean to you? Is it just another fad that sells because celebrities endorse it?
The West has, to a certain extent, packaged tantra and marketed it very well. But it has made it all about sex - and as you know, sex sells.
For me, tantra acknowledges the fact that we are sexual beings, and it shows ways to harness that energy and use it wisely. It's not just about mechanically 'doing' but about moving away from a purely sexual need to feeling deep love.
So how does tantra do this?
In my practice, I get couples who are so busy that lovemaking equals stress: 'Oh it's Sunday, so we better make love.'
Even when they are making love, they are thinking: 'Oh, what should I do next to please my partner?'
Singaporeans are always very busy. The mind is always ticking with next, next, next. Tantra teaches them how to surrender, how to just go with what happens and to be in the present. It takes the pressure out of lovemaking. It lets you accept who you are instead of trying to prove that you are a great lover. Nobody is a great lover and it is completely wrong to make it an ego thing.
What is the relationship between sex and health?
Sex releases endorphins and increases vitality. It gives you natural radiance and then you don't need much make-up (laughs). It can also deepen the relationship and lead to greater intimacy between two people.
How do you keep fit?
I run 5km or 30 minutes every day to keep my heart healthy. I do regularly practise ashtanga and hatha yoga (two different styles of yoga). I also meditate.
Any special diet?
I have my mother to thank for always encouraging me to eat lots of vegetables. I drink a lot of water. I have five small meals a day instead of three big ones. I like eating yoghurt and fruit almost every day. I also love Chinese herbs like ginseng, and I take dong quai (Angelica sinensis, commonly called 'female ginseng') to support my sexual health.
What does your mother think of your chosen vocation?
She is a free spirit and is very supportive of what I do. My father's philosophy is also simple. He is very relaxed and says: So long as it makes you happy, do it.
What are your indulgences?
I love chocolate, wine and ice cream. I'm very fussy about picking the best wine and chocolate when I have it because I know how hard I have to exercise afterwards (laughs).
How do you relax?
Sleep and sex are my favourite ways to relax because for these two activities, all I have to do is let go.
But I love to do a lot of things, and it makes me happy to do them efficiently. I'm a multi-tasker by nature.
What has your work taught you about what makes a good marriage?
Well, for two individuals to know how to love each other, communication is the key.
They have to communicate from the heart, not their heads.
Otherwise, it's just the ego talking. Ego is about controlling the other, while love is accepting the other. Lots of couples with problems say, 'Oh, when we were first dating, he or she was like this, but now he or she has changed.'
Well, they have to grow together and not apart. There has to be true awareness of themselves and the other, and this acceptance is very important.
