Calling younger women to join her support group
Mrs Dincy Lim (above), 75, is the president and founder of the Woman-to-Woman Menopause Support Group at KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
This support group provides a platform for women to discuss their fears of and clear up any myths about menopause.
The sprightly Mrs Lim said that when the group was started about 12 years ago, women were reluctant to discuss matters relating to menopause.
"There were women who were more open about their husbands' extra-marital affairs than their experience with menopause."
Mrs Dincy Lim, 75, on attitudes of women 12 years ago when she first started a menopause support group
'There were women who were more open about their husbands' extra-marital affairs than their experience with menopause. It was still a taboo topic,' she recalled.
She said that women today are much more open about the topic of menopause. Most members of the support group are menopausal women above 50 years old.
Her daughter, who is 47 this year, started experiencing perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and mood swings about three years ago.
Mrs Lim said that there are many younger women in Singapore who could benefit from learning more about perimenopause. That is why she wants to attract more from this group, who are going through perimenopause, to join the support group.
