Chic on the cheap

If you're willing to travel, there are cool alternatives to Orchard Road shopping. On Saturday (Dec 15), head down to Home Club at The Riverwalk for the last Flea.Fly.Flo.Fun. flea market of the year.

Started by The Substation's technical manager Terence Lau and fashion designer Christy Chow in October last year, the monthly flea market has been a hit for its unique buys, including original artwork and clothes by local designers.

Instead of unwanted rags, you'll find glad rags at Flea.Fly.Flo.Fun's 28 stalls. And indie types would love the local designers' corner, where designers handpicked by Chow display their talents and wares.

Regular stallholders include illustrator Pamela Hong, who doodles on Polaroids, and graphic artists duo Snatch Thieves, who create graffiti-inspired accessories and tees.

Next year, the event might go bi-monthly because of the organisers' work schedules, so try not to miss Saturday's, which is on from 4 to 10pm.

Another bazaar happening on the same day is Fash Bash at the Bellini Room and Gallery Bar of St James Power Station from 1 to 7pm.

If Flea.Fly.Flo.Fun. is indie, this one's chi-chi. Grab second-hand designer togs and accessories as well as clothes and jewellery by local designers at the 46 stalls.

A second-hand Hermes scarf has gone for as low as $5 in the past, so keep your eyes peeled.

On other days, pop by the semi-revamped Anchorpoint in Alexandra Road for good bargains.

Owner Frasers Centrepoint Malls is in the midst of turning this once-sleepy mall into Singapore's first factory outlet mall. So far, eight of the mall's 58 stores are factory outlet shops.

They are local shoe brands Charles & Keith and Pedro, Hong Kong apparel labels Giordano and G2000, Hong Kong watch chain City Chain, local optical retail chain Capitol Optical, New York women's label Club Marc and Malaysia's Factory Outlet Store, or F.O.S.

Expect to bag past seasons' items for between 20 and 70 per cent off at these stores. Shoes from Charles & Keith, for example, start from $10.

And you thought they couldn't get any cheaper.
