Basics for women

Two weeks ago, Urban featured Giordano's new Beyond Basic collection with trendier pieces for men.
You would be even more impressed by what the same line has for the girls.

GET KNOTTY (left)

A scarf looped round the neck adds instant glam to even the most casual of outfits. Sleek skinny jeans boost the city slicker feel.

Striped purple long-sleeve top, $39, khaki button-down jacket, $89, cream knit scarf, $29, black skinny jeans, $89, all from Giordano's Beyond Basic collection. Shoes, model's own

SIMPLE IS BEAUTIFUL (right)

You don't need to pile on the accessories when the details are all in the clothes. This cropped cardigan and cowl-neck get-up works perfectly on its own. Pairing it with tights and simple black pumps adds a little Parisien chic.

Black knitted cardigan with ribbon belt, $49, cream cowl-neck knit blouse, $49, black stretch slacks, $23, all from Giordano's Beyond Basic collection. Shoes, model's own.

Beyond Basic's autumn/winter 2007 range for women sure lives up to its name - the usually plain office and casualwear that the Hong Kong apparel label is known for now gets a more distinct catwalk update.

Think loose and long, tunic-like tops, skinny jeans and calf-length tights in shades like black and silver - looks favoured by many international high-street labels in the past two seasons.

Staples, too, get a modern update. Office blouses come in a slimmer fit and softer cotton, while cardigans are cropped for a funky touch and boast details such as knitted scallop frills.

You will also love the wallet-friendly prices, which range from $7 for a pair of socks to $129 for a jacket.

The 26-year-old brand known for its comfy basics is now making a fashion statement too.

Stylist Dolphin Yeo, who previewed both the men's and women's collections prior to the launch on Nov 12, approves of the togs for guys, which are 'more experimental and upmarket-looking than before'.

The men's range features leaner silhouettes and more fashionable details such as sewn-on leather patches.

'But compared to the new women's collection, I think there is some room for improvement,' Yeo says.

The new women's range is more fun and versatile, she adds.

'The cutting and shape of the clothes are more modern than before and I'm better able to layer the pieces to come up with different looks.'

Michelle Fu, 25, who works in a bank, agrees.

While she is usually togged out in business wear in 'monotonous' shades, she says Giordano's Beyond Basic women's collection would 'brighten up' her wardrobe.

'Most of what I currently own from Giordano are tank tops and shorts, but this new collection is more fashionable,' she says. 'I can see it taking me from day to night and into the weekend.'

With Yeo's help, Urban gives Fu a headstart in doing just that - going Beyond Basic for three great weekend looks.

PREPPY CHICK

You can do American sports glam simply by layering - as with this shirt and scoop-neck top combo. Swop work pants for shorts for a weekend look and don't forget the scarf - the latest must-have accessory.

White work shirt, $39, grey scoop-neck long-sleeve top, $39, black knitted scarf, $43, white cotton shorts, $25, all from Giordano's Beyond Basic collection

'THIS NEW COLLECTION IS MORE FASHIONABLE. I CAN SEE IT TAKING ME FROM DAY TO NIGHT AND INTO THE WEEKEND'

- Michelle Fu, who works in a bank
