Organic skincare
>IF you've heard that SLS or Sodium Laureate Sulfate isn't good for the scalp, then the equivalent ingredient for skincare would be ingredients like parabens and mineral oil. Paraben can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers, for example, points out Dr Jaca Cubrilo, a chemist with Lavera Naturkosmetik, an organic skincare company. On the other hand, mineral oil simply sits on the skin.

The German company has researched that women use an average of 12 skincare products a day, which has some 175 chemicals in them. And about 60 per cent of these get absorbed through the skin. So if you want to go organic, Lavera Naturkosmetik (top picture) has quite a wide range of products from skincare to bodycare, including sunblocks. Founder Thomas Haase had set up the company in 1987, about 10 years after he came up with his own lip balm for protecting his own over-sensitive skin. Lavera today makes products which are 100 per cent free from synthetic perfumes, colourants and preservative.

Distribution here has been taken over by DNA Beaute Singapore, which will make Lavera available in the top 30 selected Watson's stores in Singapore, including Ngee Ann City, Parkway Parade, Compass Point, Changi Airport T3 and Raffles City.
