Life as an environmental beauty queen is certainly not a bed of organic roses.
Freshly-crowned Miss Earth Singapore 2007 Ms Nicole Chen Lin, a 21-year-old Temasek polytechnic graduate, has started on a series of campaigning activities in Singapore and Asia to raise public awareness and sustainable development on pertinent environmental issues.
Beginning with an interactive workshop for students to teach them about re-designing old clothing at the National University of Singapore, Ms Chen and sub-title winners Ms. Emiko Thein - Miss Earth Singapore 2007 (Air) and Ms. Jaclyn Chua - Miss Earth Singapore 2007 (Fire) demonstrated how recycling old clothes by re-making them helps the conservation cause.
Participants at the workshop will be re-designing their own clothing at home for entry to the NUS Green Carnival Fashion Show. The three Miss Earth Singapore 2007 finalists will be modelling the winning works on October 22, 2007 at the NUS Central Forum.
Ms Chen also embarked on another important mission with her visit to Vietnam, with a tree-planting stint in Ho Chih Minh City. Promoting the "Green and Glamour" campaign, she toured the city on a motorcycle wearing helmets to promote 'safe and considerate driving on the roads'.
She also helped to raise funds which were donated towards the cause of the recent Can Tho bridge collapse..
Ms Chen said: "Experiencing the problems first-hand was a lot more impact-ful than watching reports over the news. It makes me feel that my responsibility as Miss Earth Singapore goes beyond helping the environmental agencies here in Singapore. I want to do my part in helping the developing countries cope with environment related problems too."
Ms. Chen will be flying off to Manila in mid-October 2007, where she will go through three weeks of grueling training with more than 90 delegates from across the globe before representing Singapore on the international stage to vie for the title of Miss Earth 2007, to be held on Nov 11, 2007.
