KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters Life!) - A Malaysian man got married at his mother's funeral in order to honor her dream of seeing him wed, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
P. Sanjeevi Rajan, 28, married his fiancee in front of the body of his mother in western Port Klang. She died of a heart attack during a trip to India to shop for his wedding, which was scheduled for June 30, the New Straits Times newspaper said.
"I could have gotten married in the temple later, but would my mother be there?" the newspaper quoted him as saying. "At least now, my mother is still here. It means the world to me."
The bride's father said both families agreed to the unusual ceremony because they thought it was a good idea.
Two priests married the couple in an hour-long ceremony on Tuesday that left out the traditional Hindu rite of walking round a holy fire. The couple will go to a temple to register their marriage on June 30, the paper added.
