Making good

ANDREW GN, 41, FASHION DESIGNER

Andrew Gn is the local boy-made-good who famously turned away Paris Hilton when she asked for free clothes.

Having developed a love for fashion from young, he enrolled in London's prestigious Central Saint Martin's when he was 18 and moved to Paris to pursue his fashion career in 1992.

He went on to earn several accolades, including being the first Asian designer ever to be hired by French couture house Pierre Balmain in 1998.

His luxe feminine creations have since been spotted on the likes of actress Nicole Kidman and cosmetics heiress Aerin Lauder.

He describes his style this way: "Always extremely feminine and fashionable without being just trendy."

How have you contributed to the Singapore fashion scene?
Hopefully, because of my career, I'm sort of an inspiration. I hope to set a standard, so that younger designers can say that there are always opportunities.

What struggles did you face along the way?
How to establish your image and status among the international buyers and international press - breaking into the international scene. But once you're in, you're in.

What is the Singapore look?
The first thing that comes to my mind is the word casual, which is fine, because then it looks like we're on vacation all the time. When I go home I always pack six pairs of shorts.

Which aspect of the Singapore style would you change?
I don't think I'd like to change the Singapore style. I'd like to change the Singapore weather. No, I'm just joking. I believe if God gives you lemons, then you should make the best lemonade. You could make casual look chic but I think chic is a fairly abstract word and it changes from time to time.
