KWANPEN, CROCODILE SKIN ACCESSORIES LABEL

It sounds like a Hong Kong label, but crocodile-skin handbag brand Kwanpen is actually a Singapore company that has been around since 1938.

The brand started out as a manufacturer for other crocodile handbag retailers, and later established itself as a reputable brand of its own, selling its crocodile bags and accessories to Malaysia, Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong.

For proof of its regional prowess, check out those lustworthy handbags that Korean TV stars are carrying. They could very well be made by Kwanpen.

With its headquarters and factories based in Singapore, Kwanpen sponsors several Korean drama shows, including Casserasera and Moonhee.

Angela Ng, marketing manager for Kwanpen, answers Urban's questions.

How has the brand contributed to the Singapore fashion scene?
Kwanpen has customers who are connoisseurs of high fashion, who belong to affluent societies, royalty and the rich and famous in Europe and the United States. Similarly, more and more of Singapore's fashion leaders and trendsetters are acquiring these fashion items as a reflection of their own individualism.

What struggles did the brand face along the way?
Educating the public on conservation through sustainable use. Kwanpen has been a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources/Crocodile Specialist Group since 1985. This means that Kwanpen buys only crocodile skin that comes with a CITES certificate, which is approved by conservation groups.

What is the Singapore look?
Tropical, light and colourful. Smart casual.

Which aspect of the Singapore style will you change?
The Singaporean concept of casual dressing. There has to be appropriate attire for different occasions. Some Singaporeans can be too casual for certain occasions.

Kwanpen is located at 01-08/09A Mandarin Hotel, 333 Orchard Road.
