The Straits Times
Singapore style

You may not know them by face. But chances are, you have seen their work every day, appreciated the editorial or advertising images they've created, or even worn or lusted after some of their designs.

The best part? They're all local and their contributions to the fashion and beauty industry go beyond our shores.

Make-up artist Clarence Lee and hairstylist David Gan have put Singapore on the world map, being the often called-upon duo who doll up Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi for her red carpet duties.

Others like Europe-based designers Andrew Gn and Ashley Isham have done Singapore proud with their haute couture and pret-a-porter collections that every fashionista would die to get her hands on.

Tiny Singapore makes up for talent what it lacks in size. As celebrated beauty photographer Kenneth Wong says: "Models come to town to get their portfolios done because we're forward, internationally recognised, trendy and in the moment."

Dave Soh, whose jewellery we feature on this week's cover, says there is a shift in mentality.

"Before, there was a preconceived notion that if you're a local label, you're not good. But in the last two to three years, there's been a change. I brand my jewellery as locally designed and made, as that has a certain cachet now."

His Dave's Fine Jewellery, a line of necklaces, rings and earrings priced from $106 to $899, is available at Tangs Orchard and Robinsons The Centrepoint. He says that local customers are often surprised at its quality and workmanship, and when they realise it's locally made, they snap it up. It's also good with tourists. "Half of my business are foreign buyers from Indonesia, Britain and the United States."

There is more talent to be proud of. Lensmen John Clang and Leslie Kee are already celebrated fixtures in the fashion scenes of New York and Paris.

Over here, the schedules of fashion photographer Wee Khim and fashion stylist Johnny Khoo are so packed with commercials and editorial shoots that it was hard for them to sit down for a chat with Urban.

We've picked 12 individuals and labels to honour. But there's definitely more where they come from.
