For mothers-to-be, your baby bump is probably the best fashion accessory to show off during the nine months of pregnancy!
And pregnant fashionistas are spoilt for choice these day, with the wide choices of maternity wear options hitting the retail scene in Singapore.
Check out Paragon's 5th floor for its collection of maternity wear shops as well as Forum The Shopping Mall.
And the latest maternity wear label making its debut here is Egg.
Ms Charlotte Deveraux-Kay (top picture: left), Egg's co-owner, said: "It has been a common refrain in every new market we've entered. Mothers-to-be just can't find fashionionable garments to wear."
Egg was conceived when Ms Deveraux-Kay was expecting her first child. When she and co-owner mum, Ms Colyn Deveraux (top picture: right), could not find anything when they went shopping for maternity wear in New Zealand, both decided to start their own line of maternal clothes. The Egg outlet here is a franchise of the duo's successful maternity label, run by Ms Rochelle Angus(top picture: centre).
It helps too that Ms Deveraux-Kay has a design background and loves fashion.
AsiaOne got Ms Deveraux-Kay to give some styling tips and the must-haves apparel to complement those growing curves.
Egg's 16th new store, besides its other franchise outlets in New Zealand, Australia, and the Philippines, opened in July in Singapore at Vivocity, #01-58.
1) AsiaOne: What kinds of styles will see a woman from first through to third trimester?
Ms Deveraux-Kay: The key basics I would recommend are:-
A pair of smart, tailored pants, especially for the corporate girls.
The Miracle Top. Wear it like a kimono top or as a gorgeous skirt!
A pair of jeans with an elastic waist.
A dress that can dressed down with a pair of sandals, or dressed up for evening with some gorgeous sparkly accessories!
Egg's 5-way skirt, that can be worn also as a dress
A tube top for versatility. You can try Egg's Seamless Flexitube that can be worn as a strapless top (with support). Layer it under tops, or it can also be worn as a tummy support and a top extender as the baby bump grows!
A basic T shirt and singlet. You can find one from our Organic cotton range that will be perfect for the tropical climate in Singapore!
2) AsiaOne: Comfort is key, yet we don't want to sacrifice style. What pointers can you give to pregnant women who want to look and feel good?
Ms D-K: It is important to wear as much natural and breathable fibre as possible. Apart from the Singapore heat, your body is a few degrees warmer when pregnant. Going up a few sizes in non-maternity clothing can often make a shape look frumpy and while certain styles lend themselves well, like the baby doll look, not all shapes will work. This is especially true for pants!
3) AsiaOne: A working mum-to-be needs to look professional too. How should she dress for the office?
Ms D-K: A fabulous pants and crisp white shirt combination is such a smart, classical look, which you can layer over with a wrap for a frosty air-conditioned work place.
Wrap dresses are also a great look, layered over coloured tops for some fun and versatility
4) AsiaOne: What materials work best for a growing belly?
Ms D-K: Lots of Lycra for extra stretch from Cotton Spandex to a soft, drapey Micro Modal!
5) AsiaOne: What is suitable lingerie for mothers-to-be?
Ms D-K: It important to wear a comfortable bra without under wire - especially from 6 months onwards. This is a good time to purchase at least two breastfeeding bras and get into the habit of wearing them. EGG has a seamless style with lace which looks exactly like a regular fashionable bra.
