Dressing up my two-year-old takes forever in the morning

Q Dressing up my two-year-old takes forever in the morning. She never wants to wear what I pick out. Any tips?

A They don't call it the terrible twos for nothing. But you're the adult here. Take control of the situation. Here are your options:

1. Dress her while she's fast asleep. That way, you are less likely to have to deal with a screaming fit.

2. Do the whole reverse psychology thing. If she wants to run around naked or wear mismatched clothes, let her. At some point, some playmate is going to point out how ridiculous she looks. Nothing like a little peer pressure to put things in perspective.

3. Make it child's play. Dressing should be fun whether you're two or 30. Spin a fairy tale to get her to put on a dress or find clothes that are fun to wear.

Like this Made By Me T-shirt kit ($30, top picture) that I found at lifestyle and fashion store Anthropology (33 Erskine Road, 01-06).

The kit comes with a tee and a permanent marker, so kids can let loose their inner Picasso and create their own wearable masterpiece.

But here's a thought: Maybe she just hates the stuff you've picked out.

As a child, I'd squirm and fidget and make excuses whenever my mother tried to make me wear some frou-frou frock she liked but I hated. That was my way of telling her: 'That's not cool, Mum.'

Your daughter could well be a fashionista in the making with better taste than you.
