I REFER to the interesting commentary, 'Punish those who turn a blind eye' (my paper, Feb 2) by Mr Chong Chee Kin.
His suggestion of using the stick to get passengers to check on drink-drivers is a good one, especially when the punishment is directed at the right place - that is, their pockets.
However, isn't there a better way of motivating people to do the right thing?
Shouldn't care and concern be the main factor behind doing what is right?
Passengers should dissuade drink-drivers from driving, not out of fear of being punished but out of brotherly love and concern for the drivers' safety.
Positive values should be inculcated in people so that they will always do the right thing for the right reasons.
Following the law just to avoid getting fined cannot be counted as doing the right thing.
