Harsher penalties for drink-drivers
Mon, Feb 09, 2009
my paper

I REFER to the letter, "Dissuade drink-driving out of love, not fear" (my paper, Feb 5).

I do not think someone who is drunk would be able to listen to sound advice.

I propose that the following harsh penalties be meted out to those caught drink-driving:

  • Confiscate offender's car
  • Raise fine to 10 times of car's original purchase price (with no discounts off the list price)
  • One year's jail and 10-year ban from driving and buying another vehicle after jail term
  • Subsequent offences to be punished with double the above penalties and caning.
