Summonses issued to motorcyclists riding at common areas

WE REFER to the letter "'No Cycling' signs at New Upper Changi Road" (Oct 13).

We wish to thank Mr Low for his letter and wish to inform him and readers that the notices and signages were the first phase of our plan to educate and remind residents of the potential consequences of riding motorcycles and bicycles at the common areas, which endanger pedestrians.

We started the second phase of our plan this month by conducting random enforcement checks against illicit riding of motorcycles and bicycles at the common areas. So far, we have issued four summonses to motorcyclists and have verbally advised reckless cyclists.

The Bedok Task Force against Illegal Riding by Motorcyclists and Cyclists was formed this year to tackle the problem of illegal riding and parking at the common areas in Bedok division.

We wish to reassure readers that we are very concerned about this problem, which we found to be an island-wide problem. The task force will continue to take different approaches to curb the problem.
