Worst driving habit is tailgating

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Tailgating and failure to use the indicators are among the most annoying habits on the road, according to an online poll conducted as part of the Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (Mufors) initiative.

The poll of 1,000 motorists found that 11.2 per cent felt that aggressive tailgating which includes forcing other drivers to make way, flashing of headlights and failure to use the indicators annoy them the most.

Other irritants are Mat Rempit (nine per cent) and road hoggers (8.8 per cent).

A Mat Rempit is a colloquial term for an individual who participates in street racing, usually on motorcycles.

Mufors is a community project to allow motorists to voice their thoughts and concerns regarding road safety.

The initiative is supported by Plus Expressways Berhad and started on Aug 18.

Plus Expressways managing director and Mufors chairman, Noorizah Abdul Hamid hopes all Malaysians will visit the website and participate in the poll to voice their concerns about Malaysian road habits.

"This initiative belongs to all Malaysians and everyone should come together to support and complement the government's efforts in promoting road safety and saving lives," she said.

Pledges can be made by motorists on how to reduce accidents and save lives and they can honour them between 9am and 9pm on Sept 9.

"Our fervent hope is that these pledges honoured over a 12-hour period will be transformed into a lifetime of change,"Noorizah said.

The pledges can be made in the form of text, video or photos. It is learnt that visitors can also share their rants or raves in the website. To be a part of Mufors, motorists can log on to http://www.090909.org.my.
