Driver, 74, suffers heart attack, hits two vehicles

By ALEXIS CAI

AN ELDERLY motorist, who apparently had a heart attack while at the wheel of his Mitsubishi sedan, crashed into two other vehicles in Joo Chiat Road on Sunday.

When ambulance officers got to Mr Tan Kau, the 74-year-old retired teacher was unconscious.

He had no visible injuries and was taken to Changi General Hospital, where he died at about 11.35am.

Mr Tan was driving his wife towards Changi Road when he suddenly lost control of his car, which veered and spun into the opposite lane.

It crashed into two other vehicles - a car and a private bus - before stopping near the Church of Singapore.

The driver of the other car, a 63-year-old man, was warded for slight injuries. No one else was injured.

Mr Tan's only son, Mr Tan Shao Chong, said on March 1 that his parents were out on a household errand when the accident happened.

Neighbours said the elderly couple had been living in their Carpmael Road terrace house in the Joo Chiat area for many years, and that their son visited them almost daily.

They also have a daughter who is overseas.

Anyone with information on the accident may contact the police on 1800-547-1818.
