I drive a two-year old car. Of late, I noticed that the temperature gauge stays at the halfway mark. Does it mean that the engine is overheated?

It is fine when the needle of the engine temperature meter stays between cold and hot. The engine operating temperature will vary with changes in engine load and weather but it shouldn't be close to hot under normal operating conditions.
If you suspect cooling system troubles, have your car checked by a workshop as soon as possible.
