I AGREE with the sentiments expressed in the letter, "Public transport not reliable" (my paper, Oct 28).
I am a daily bus commuter and find the physical state of our buses deplorable.
The seats are too close. We are living in an affluent society and people have grown taller and bigger. Hence, the size of the seats also needs to be changed.
There are also leaking air-conditioners, noise from TV Mobile and tiny cockroaches in buses.
While Singapore has been complimented for its efficient public-transport system, it should not be forgotten that the standard of living here is high, as is the cost of owning a car.
The amount of money we have to pump into buying a car could pay for a respectable property in Australia.
The bus fares we pay also do not commensurate with the service and quality provided.
I speak for myself when I say that there is no need for air-conditioning and TV Mobile on board buses.
All we need is a clean and safe bus ride that can take us from one point to another.
Some buses are so crowded that bus captains allow passengers to board at the exit, and passengers have to stand on the entrance and exit steps during their journey.
I have written to SBS Transit and the Public Transport Council about my concerns.
SBS Transit replied that statistics show that the buses had not exceeded their passenger limits.
While this may be the case, it is dangerous for passengers to stand on bus steps.
I hope something can be done about this before accidents happen.
