Business as usual for Malaysian petrol stations

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia:

The petrol station operators' adherence to the "no credit card" advisory has not been totally accepted.

For most of the stations visited by the New Straits Times, it was business as usual.

In the Klang Valley, numerous operators in Sentul, Puchong, Shah Alam, Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Subang Jaya and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre were accepting credit cards.

Likewise at several petrol kiosks in Johor Baru and Malacca.

Several petrol stations in Petaling Jaya and Ipoh rejected credit card transactions.

In Seri Kembangan, Serdang, a petrol station operator said they would only accept credit cards until tomorrow.

In Kuching, it was reported that some petrol stations, especially those who were not members of the Petroleum Dealers Association, ignored the advisory.

Association president Abdul Wahid Bidin said the advice was mainly being followed by seasoned dealers.

"The 'old-timers' are following what we are advising them to do.

"However, the new dealers are scared that their contracts may be terminated by the oil companies," he said, adding that the government had many ways of helping out dealers with the issue, one of which was to pass on the commission charges to oil companies.
