Cab driver beaten up over a street directory

Private student, Zhang Bing, and her friend, Li Jiaqi, 24, were jailed on Monday for assaulting taxi driver, Edwin Yap Hock Seng, 58.

The driver had demanded compensation for a street directory that one of them had vomited on, reported Lianhe Wanbao.

The incident occurred on Oct 24 last year.

Both Li and Zhang, along with Zhang's then-boyfriend Huang Bokai, 21, boarded the taxi after a booze-fuelled night along Orchard Road.

Li, who sat at the front passenger seat, started vomiting once the taxi had reached the basement of a condominium along Geylong Lorong 40. Mr Yap stopped his vehicle and Li got out to throw up. Zhang got out of the taxi to help Li, while her boyfriend remained in the car.

Mr Yap noticed that not only had the vomit soiled the car interior, it had also dirtied his street directory.

According to Wanbao, he then told Huang, who was still in the car, that the street directory belonged to the company and that they would have to pay for it. Huang refused to pay although Mr Yap insisted that the street directory could no longer be used.

Huang got off the taxi to tell his friends about it.

Li then rushed towards Mr Yap and punched him on the face. Mr Yap fell to the floor.

Zhang and Huang joined Li in punching and kicking him.

A condominium security guard heard his cries for help and rushed to his aid.

Mr Yap was warded at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for three days, suffering from a broken nose and multiple bruises on his face. He also suffered from short-term memory loss when first admitted to the hospital.

Li was sentenced to two month's jail, while Zhang was sentenced to one month. Huang has since returned to China.
