TANGKAK, MALAYSIA - SEVERAL Singaporean motorists were among 49 drivers booked for various traffic violations during a joint-operation along the Pagoh Tangkak expressway here.

The Singaporean motorists were all booked for speeding, while some of the bus and truck drivers were booked for excessive smoke emission and permit-related violations.

Bukit Aman (southern zone) senior traffic officer Asst. Supt. Salam Hamdan said those who violated the traffic laws faced a maximum fine of RM300 (S$126).

'Several of those caught for speeding were women and some of the motorists even hit speeds above 140kph,' he added.

Those who violated Department of Environment (DOE) regulations such as excessive smoke emission faced a maximum fine of RM2,000.

ASP Salam said the operation was part of the on-going Ops Sikap launched during the Chinese New Year celebration to curb accidents along the highway.

He said more than 50 personnel from various enforcement departments, including the police, DOE and Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board participated in the operation.

He said the joint operation would continue until February 2 and urged all motorists to observe the road safety regulations. -THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
