JOHOR BARU, Malaysia: The RON95 petrol and Euro 2M grade diesel will hit the market by Sept 1, the Domestic Trade And Consumer Affairs Ministry announced.
Its minister, Datuk Shahrir Samad, said the prices for both upgraded fuels would be the same as the previous grades.
The higher grade RON95 will replace the RON92 petrol but will be sold at the same price as the lower-grade petrol.
"Not all cars use RON92 petrol. The change will give consumers a better alternative at a lower price," Shahrir told reporters here yesterday.
He said the announcement to replace current grades of fuel was made last year.
"Most cars need only RON95 and do not require higher-octane levels," he said.
The highest grade commonly available is RON97.
On the diesel upgrade to EURO 2M, he said the Government aimed to introduce a higher quality fuel for modern diesel engines.
"The upgrade will result in cleaner emissions and a better environment," he said, adding that the current diesel fuel was of the lowest grade due to its high sulphur content. -The Star/ANN
