JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA - The plan to scrap the import of used auto spare parts by 2011 is unacceptable and needs to be reviewed, the pro-tem committee of the Johor Used Lorry and Car Spare Parts Traders Association said yesterday.
It would result in a wastage of re-usable auto parts and a significant increase in insurance premiums, it said.
The move, scheduled to take place within the next 18 months was made to spur the development of local parts manufacturers and achieve higher localisation of car parts.
Association pro-tem member Julian Lee said it would result in the soaring cost of vehicle maintenance, since only new parts would be imported.
"Since our country does not manufacture most of the imported spare parts such as gearboxes and engines for various models, we are heavily dependent on imports.
"But if new and original spare parts are to be used instead, who would pay for a RM30,000($12,300) gearbox for example, when you can buy a re-usable one at RM3,000?"
He said developed countries such as Britain, Singapore and Japan were still importing used original spare parts.
Another member, Ng Keng Heng said: "Used spare parts are important since you can't expect car manufacturers such as Honda to keep manufacturing parts for their 10-year-old models. This way, old but original parts can also help to deter customers from buying imitation ones."
On the aim for safer and environmental sustenance by using new parts, Ng, who is also Kota Tinggi MCA chairman, said: "By re-using the old parts, aren't we actually doing our part in conserving the environment? As for the perceived danger in using original used parts, there has been no case of cars fitted with these being involved in an accident."
