Small car COE premiums rise

By Tony Ng

Premiums for Certificates of Entitlement (COE) have somewhat stabilised at the end of Nov's second open bidding.

There were no large differences between the new and previous COE prices, with only minute adjustments of about 2-3 per cent.

The premium for small cars increased by 2.6 per cent to close at $17,189 - up from $16,747.

Premium for cars of 1,601cc and above went the other way - it dropped 2.1 per cent to $18,002, down from $18,389.

The price for the open category - mostly used for cars - also fell to $18,267, down from $19,000. It was a 3.9 per cent drop.

Dealers are expected to revise their prices for small cars with the increment.

Mr Leon Gumpert, general manager of sales for Volkswagen Singapore, said: "We will revise our small car prices by about $500 and we expect other dealers to do the same."

The launch price of the new Volkswagen Polo was revealed to the press to be at $62,800, with the old COE price in mind. It has now been revised to $63,300 for this weekend's launch.

In the commercial vehicle segment, the COE price increased by $11 to $17,000 while the COE price for motorcycles dropped by $51 to $851.
