Train services to Pasir Ris and Marina Bay saw a "slight" delay this morning due to train faults, SMRT said on its Twitter channel today.
One passenger who was travelling on a south-bound service to Marina Bay said the train he was on travelled for a total of two stops in half an hour.
The commuter, who wanted to be known as Philip, told citizen-journalism portal Stomp that passengers on the train eventually had to alight at Yio Chu Kang.
He said that there were no signs in the train telling passengers to alight.
A similar delay took place at Lakeside MRT station at 4pm on Monday. A train had broken down and passengers were told to alight at that station.
NEW HIGH FOR TRAIN, BUS RIDERSHIP
A separate report in The Straits Times on Tuesday highlighted that train and bus ridership had surged to a high last year, which meant a seventh consecutive growth in annual ridership (see table below).
The report cited figures from the Land Transport Authority, pointing to a 10.9 per cent increase in train ridership (to 2.406 million trips per day).
Bus ridership increased 5.8 per cent to 3.385 million trips a day.
Overall, the average number of trips made on public transport (trains and buses) grew 7.9 per cent to 5.791 million.
Three factors were cited for the trend: a growing population, stricter controls on cars and an expanded rail network.
